The Gavin Jones era at Everton is officially underway, and July 2023 provided an early glimpse of what’s to come. A packed pre-season schedule took the Blues across the Atlantic and back again, with some encouraging signs, standout performances, and unfortunately, a few setbacks.

Match Results Recap

New York Red Bulls 0–3 Everton

A strong opening to the pre-season tour. Calvert-Lewin stole the show with a hat-trick, and Everton looked sharp in possession.

Star Player: Calvert-Lewin (10.0)

New York City FC 2–1 Everton

The only blip of the month. Despite Pickford’s heroics, the Toffees couldn’t convert their chances. Danjuma’s late goal gave hope, but a penalty sunk the comeback.

Star Player: Pickford (7.5, 6 saves including a penalty)

North Carolina FC 0–3 Everton

A composed and confident display. Goals from Danjuma, DCL, and Dobbin showed Everton’s depth and attacking fluidity.

Star Player: Pickford (8.2, clean sheet + penalty save)

1. FC Saarbrücken 2–3 Everton

A wild one in Germany! A DCL hat-trick rescued the win after an early own goal. Concern late on as Danjuma limped off injured.

Star Player: Calvert-Lewin (9.8, 3 goals)

Standout Performers ⭐️

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

7 goals in 4 appearances. Ruthless, clinical, and back to his best. His movement and aerial dominance were unstoppable all month.

“I’m enjoying my football again. The manager has given me real confidence to lead the line.”

Jordan Pickford

Commanding at the back. Two penalty saves, strong distribution, and leadership at key moments.

Nathan Patterson

Energetic and reliable, the young full-back created chances and defended solidly. A real bright spark in the system.

Transfer News 🔁

Kyle John joins Grimsby Town on loan

The 22-year-old right-back heads to League Two in search of regular football.

“It’s a great opportunity for Kyle to develop and show what he can do,” said Gavin Jones.

Injury Report 🚑

Arnaut Danjuma

Suffered pulled knee ligaments vs. Saarbrücken. Expected to miss 3–4 weeks.

“It’s frustrating, but I’ll bounce back stronger,” Danjuma said after the diagnosis.

Manager’s Summary 🎙️

Gavin Jones:

“I’m proud of the way the lads have started. We’re building something, and I’ve seen encouraging signs across the board. DCL’s been excellent, the defence is improving, and we’re learning from every match. August will be a step up, but we’re ready.”

What’s Next in August?

  • Final pre-season tune-ups
  • Squad decisions before the transfer window closes
  • Competitive action begins!

Verdict

July was a month of goals, growth, and good signs. There’s still work to be done, but Everton under Gavin Jones are off to a flying start.
